Let everyone know of this awesome event. You see, I remember you calling our part of the country the “Purple Mountain Majesties” when you came through last year on your “Christmas Sweater” Book Tour. By the way, what a heartfelt, good feeling book and it was an honor meeting you and shaking your hand. We are a small city tucked within the southeastern part of Idaho, with a population of about 51,000 good natured, patriotic people. Each year around Memorial Day, people from all over the area come to volunteer their time for what is called the “Field Of Heroes”. This event is like NONE other in the country. The first time I walked through the many rows of wooden crosses with name on them, I buckled down on my knees with overwhelming emotional sobbing of sorrow but yet feeling honored to be surrounded by those men and women who gave their lives for me and you and all Americans. It is just so amazing how this event comes into fold with the enormous amount of patriotic human beings who volunteer their man hours to make it happen by (1) checking the list of our most recent casualties of war and making new crosses (2) assembling materials (3) laying out the crosses in perfect and proper angles (something very similar to Arlington National Cemetery) (4) pounding the holes in the ground. I could go on and on with the list of things that this community does to support the “Field Of Heroes”. The website listed below explains the whole event. This event should be nationally publicized because it shows just how much a community can work together in hard times and good times. Of course, it’s without saying that in lieu of some of those who are against the war and do not appreciate the military, this year we will be posting security watches around the clock to keep the place safe. When I retired from the Navy of 23 years
in 2005, I hesitated to move to Pocatello, Idaho. It is where my husband’s
family is from and I agreed we would move here to help them. Being lost and
lonely for the comradra of fellow military members, I was surprised to find that
I hit the jackpot. This community is full of active, retired and reserve
military organizations that pledge their support to helping others. President
Obama once mentioned how important it was to be involved with your community and
that is so very right. Jackie Cullen P.S. My son is in the Navy and is
stationed over in Afghanistan. Field
